I am so lucky to have an amazing job at the best high school in the world with the most wonderful students (MOST of the time). Here I will share my musings, reflect on literature, and showcase cool assignments.
We were honored to have Sonja DuBois, Holocaust survivor, hidden child, spend the day with us on Thursday, April 3. Her story was compelling and moving and we so enjoyed getting to know her. She is pictured here with her husband, Ron.
Survivor of Sobibor
Pictured here are some of my students with Mr. Phillip Bialowitz, one of the ten living survivors of the Nazi extermination camp Sobibor. His son, Joe Bialowitz, is in the picture as well. It was an honor to hear Mr. Bialowitz speak.
English II had a unique opportunity. We partnered with Mrs. Adam's Desktop Publishing Class and are working on oral histories of residents of Garden Plaza. Students went down on Tuesday to do six interviews of seven very interesting individuals. The residents seemed to enjoy their time with us and my students made me proud! One gentleman was ninety-two and had seen quite a lot of history in his life! Another couple made the girls swoon when they told them that they were high school sweethearts, broke up and married other people, had families, then, when their spouses died, they married each other two and a half years ago. It was a great opportunity for us.

Escape from sobibor brought many emotions to me. It brought the usual Oh my gosh, wow, and what in the worlds. It also had shown me a new light. The movie showed me that through all the time at the camps they had hope. hope of living and surviving. It was amazing to have a picture of a small group of people plan and take out an entire system, and what dangers people had to face if they were caught. I'm still trying to decide if i would have been envolved in such an effort like that. It is basically impossible for me to put myself in that situation; i just can't imagine it.
Escape from Sobibor was something else. I can't even begin to imagine what it must have been like for those poor people, but what makes me proud is they did what everybody thought was impossible. They master minded an escape form one of the worst death camps in Germany. I myself would have probably been to afaid to do anything. I really admire all the courage they showed, and in the end it payed off for them.
